We get asked about using asphalt vs. concrete frequently. The answer is…it depends on the application.
Using Asphalt
Your typical residential streets are usually constructed with asphalt. It is durable and a cost effective means to pave a street. Even high traffic areas with heavy vehicles can be constructed with asphalt, as long as the street or area is designed and built with such traffic in mind.
Asphalt is ideal for most parking areas as well. If constructed and maintained properly, asphalt is very durable. Maintenance on an asphalt street is cost effective as well. You can fix small areas as easily as large areas and traffic can drive on the repairs within a few hours.
Using Concrete
For storage areas, loading docks and areas where heavy vehicles or loads are stationary for periods of time, concrete may be a better choice. This is because asphalt remains pliable so that it can flex with the changing soil conditions. Because it remains pliable asphalt can fail under these heavy loads and these loads can sink into the asphalt and create indentations.
Concrete on the other hand is durable and strong when subjected to heavy loads. When constructed properly, it’s capable of supporting the heaviest of loads. It is also ideally suited to driveway aprons in delivery areas, dumpster pads and anywhere a heavy vehicle turns or is stationary for a long period of time. Concrete that is maintained properly can be a long lasting solution in high traffic, heavy vehicle areas.
Another feature of concrete is the variety of styles and colors that are available. Stamped concrete in patio and entrance-ways can be aesthetically pleasing as well as adding value to your property.
So when you are faced with the decision of asphalt vs. concrete ask yourself a few questions before you decide.
- How big is the area to be repaired or installed?
- How heavy are the vehicles in this area?
- Will materials be stored in this area?
